Approval Granted for Major Premier Inn Hotel Development in Bangor
A planning application has been approved by Ards and North Down Borough Council Planning Committee for a major redevelopment on the site of the old Bangor Leisure Centre at Castle Park Avenue in Bangor.
The £7 million investment is for an 85 bedroom Premier Inn hotel as well as an on-site restaurant which will be open to the public. It is estimated that the proposal will create over 30 jobs when completed.
Premier Inn, the UK based hotel brand, named the UK’s top rated hotel brand in 2016 according to Which? has over 750 hotels across the UK and 7 in Northern Ireland. The popular hotelier has been looking for a suitable site in Bangor for a number of years and considers the Castle Park Avenue site, which has been vacant since early 2013,the ideal location.
Bangor is one of Northern Ireland’s most attractive seaside resorts and the Hotel will be in close proximity to the towns’ excellent retail offer and the Aurora Leisure Centre. The area also has excellent direct access to Belfast by road and rail. The hotel is therefore expected to attract thousands of additional visitors to Bangor each year.
Premier Inn has been working with their development partner, Conway Group, on the plans which were submitted to the Council in March 2016.
Des Taggart, Property Director of Conway Group commented:
‘’We have a longstanding relationship with Premier Inn Hotels having already successfully developed their hotels in Lisburn and Londonderry, extensions at Lisburn and Carrickfergus, refurbishment works at Waring Street in Belfast city centre and we are pleased to build on that work through this significant new hotel for Bangor.’’
‘’The new Premier Inn Hotel in Bangor will be a fantastic addition to the area and will boost the local economy as well as supporting the ongoing regeneration of the town.’’
Matt Aubrey, Whitbread Acquisitions Manager for Northern Ireland, said:
“We’re delighted to be working alongside the Conway Group again and we’re really looking forward to the construction process getting underway. It’s a great location and we’re looking forward to opening and operating a Premier Inn hotel in Bangor.”
Commenting on the approval, Richard Bowman of Holywood Planning Consultancy Strategic Planning, said:
‘’Strategic Planning is delighted to have delivered the planning approval for this exciting development. The existing former leisure centre building has been vacant for some time and the redevelopment of this landmark site is therefore long overdue.’’
‘’The quality of materials and finishes of the new hotel have been designed sensitively in order to respect the unique local setting including the Bangor Castle and Historic Demesne.’’
North Down MLA Gordon Dunne, who spoke in favour of the planning application at the Planning Committee meeting stated:
‘’I strongly welcome the economic benefits associated with this proposal which will bring a vacant site back to life and put an important local area on a sustainable footing into the future.’’
‘’Ongoing public realm works as well as the approval of the Queens Parade masterplan will see significant further investment in the town and Bangor will continue to grow in popularity and attract many new visitors in the coming years. This Premier Inn Hotel can only help the town grow in that respect.’’« Back to News
